Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is Conservation Framing?

Conservation framing uses special techniques and materials to protect framed items from environmental damage. This method ensures the longevity and preservation of artwork by using acid-free materials and UV-protective glazing.

  • Are there different levels of conservation framing?

Yes. The Picture Framers Guild of Australia recommends two levels: Category 4 “Conservation” and Category 5 “Museum,” offering protection for 25 years or more. Visit the PFGA website for more information.

  • What materials are used in conservation framing?

We use high-quality Tru Vue glass or acrylic, Crescent cotton matboards and acid-free foam core backing for superior protection. These materials prevent harmful UV rays and other environmental factors from damaging your framed piece.

  • What about framing practices?

The focus is on reversible mounting methods and inert (stable) materials that won't damage the artwork. This includes:

    • Archival hinging for paper artworks, allowing for expansion or contraction due to environmental conditions.
    • Mylar encapsulation or support for framed items where hinging isn't suitable.
    • Lace mounting or hand stitching for textiles like embroidery, cross-stitch and garments. We never use glue or adhesives on textiles.
  • Do you outsource any work?

Yes, for specialised services like restoration and some repairs, we collaborate with leading experts in the region:

    • Canvas restoration & repair: Chris Payne (AICCM member) - The Art Conservation Studio - (08) 8566-2952
    • Textile restoration & repair: Mary Jose (Fabric of Life) - 0404 871 707
